Design is conquering new spaces of application in our complex society: what once was widely associated with applied arts and considered as related to the functional and aesthetic aspects of objects is now acquiring strategic and systematic value. Design is entering in companies and institutions for its ability “to devise courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones”, in the words of Herbert Simon.

Introducing the activities of PACO Design Collaborative, the international network which investigates the impact of Design and Education in fostering social innovation and sustainable business models, Fabrizio Pierandrei will illustrate the evolution of Design from its original role to the current one and to the possible future one: a discipline able to manage complex processes, focusing on detecting and fulfilling human needs and aspirations, creating solutions to challenging problems and redefining the limits of human life.

A particular attention will be given to PARTY – Participatory development with the Youth, a EU-funded project in collaboration with University of Lapland, University of Leeds, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Namibian University of Science and Technology, and the South African San Institute (SASI). The aim of the project is to involve the communities of San People in South Africa and Namibia in a process to endorse human development and reduce youth unemployment by involving young people in service development through the use of participatory and explorative service design tools.
Fabrizio Pierandrei has a degree in Architecture from the University of Genoa, Italy. He began his career with Renzo Piano in 1989. In 1997 he founded Pierandrei Associati promoting a holistic approach to architecture which disregards the boundaries between design and other fields, gathers methodologies and tools from different disciplines and advocates the need of cutting edge research on technological, social and behavioral features. His skills range from metadesign to behavioral research, from concept design to detail in architecture, interiors, product, service and strategic design. In 2012 he founded PACO Design Collaborative, an innovative network of professionals whose projects explore the potential of Design and Education in fostering social innovation, sustainable behaviors and business opportunities.
Looking forward to seeing you at the event, I send you my best regards.
