Inspiring New Ways

Letter from the South African Consul General in Milan -

Dear Readers,
I am pleased to introduce myself to all of you.  My name is Titi Stheni Nxumalo and I have started my 4-year mandate as Consul-General in Milan at the end of July 2016.
I started my political career at a very young age when I actively participated in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. In 2005, I was appointed to the position of Director: Disarmament, Non Proliferation and Arms Control in the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). Four years later, I was posted to the South African Embassy in Vienna, Austria, where I served as Minister Plenipotentiary. Upon completion of my term of duty in December 2012, I returned back to South Africa where I assumed the responsibility to serve as the Director: United Nations at DIRCO.
In these first two months in Milan, I had the opportunity to learn about the excellent relationships between Italy and South Africa and to meet representatives of key institutions as well as some of my counterparts from the large diplomatic community in Milan.
I wish to reiterate South Africa’s interest in further strengthening the relations with Italy and its welcoming people through our public and economic diplomacy activities to achieve those national priorities set by the South African Government in the National Development Plan to eradicate poverty, create jobs and grow the economy.
I look forward to meeting you on future occasions and invite you to stay connected with us not to miss any opportunity to learn more about South Africa.
Warm regards.
Titi Stheni Nxumalo
Milan, 18 July 2016
On 18 July 2016 the staff of the South African Consulate-General in Milan honoured Mandela Day at Centro Ambrosiano di Aiuto alla Vita (CAV) in Milan.
CAV was founded in 1980 in Milan by some volunteers to fight against voluntary abortion and promote life, to assist single women with all the problems of dealing with pregnancy alone. CAV assists women or families through psychological and material help to avoid voluntary abortion.
Upon arrival the staff was introduced to some of the volunteers and was allocated to different duties. While some staff members helped with sorting out baby clothes, some others assisted with small maintenance/repairing works for baby toys. Clothes and baby toys or equipment are donated on a regular basis and collected at the centre to be handed over to mothers and their newly born babies. Upon completion of the above activities, the staff members were awarded with a CAV certificate recognizing their volunteers’ work.

Vicenza, 3-7 September 2016
South Africa could not miss the opportunity of participating in the VICENZAORO September exhibition, being a leading producer and exporter of precious metals, diamonds and jewellery in sub-Saharan Africa. Due to the importance of the mining & minerals sector, which contributes to 4,9% of the GDP,  the South African government has established the O.R. Tambo Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct, a Special Economic Zone that has been specifically earmarked for the manufacturing of jewellery given its location advantage of being within the area adjoining the O.R. Tambo International Airport, Africa’s largest and busiest airport.  The special economic zone offers very competitive rental rates, attractive tax incentives, reduced corporate tax rates at 15%, VAT exemption, duty free imports of raw materials or equipment utilised for production in the Zone, state of the art security and various other incentives and services. Consul-General Nxumalo addressed potential investors during an exclusive event held on 6 September 2016.
