McGregor è un piccolo villaggio nella valle di Robertson, a circa 150 chilometri da Città del Capo. Una sola strada asfaltata lunga una decina di chilometri lo collega al capoluogo della Breede River Valley, noto per i vini ai quali presta il proprio nome. Oltre McGregor si può andare soltanto usando strade di terra battuta o a piedi. Una di queste strade si chiama "Road to nowhere" perché non porta in alcun luogo. In realtà avrebbe dovuto collegare McGregor con Greyton, sotto la catena di montagne che separa le due località, ma siccome a costruire la strada pare fossero prigionieri di guerra italiani, quando furono liberati il progetto non ebbe seguito. Ne consegue che per andare da Greyton a McGregor, invece di 16 chilometri, bisogna farne un centinaio.

Nonostante il relativo isolamento, McGregor è un villaggio conosciuto e ottimamente attrezzato per il tipo di turismo che attira. La struttura più importante è sicuramente "Temenos", un luogo specializzato in ritiri, seminari, concerti, soggiorni di studio e meditazione. Il complesso dispone di una dozzina di cottages e appartamentini "self-catering", di sale per ricevimenti, matrimoni e celebrazioni varie e di un ristorante che si chiama "Tebaldi" e che la dice lunga sulle preferenze musicali e gastronomiche dei proprietari. Tanto è vero che ci hanno scritto perché li aiutiamo a trovare uno chef italiano. Ecco un estratto della loro lettera:

Hi Ciro. I was serious when I mentioned about the possibility of finding an Italian Chef, either locally or from abroad. Our restaurant has been upgraded since you were last here – and has been doing very well. I would however like to swing the menu more towards Italian fare, and would be very interested in hiring, or going into partnership with, an Italian chef or someone skilled at Italian food. Do you still have your newspaper and would it be possible to advertise in it to see what response we could get? Also, would you have any ideas how we might best go about finding chef in Italy, if we can’t find one locally? I look forward to hearing from you".

The 19th century village of McGregor, dreaming away in a quiet valley at the end of a road going nowhere, is home to artists, craftsmen, and colorful characters.

Here life is slow, tranquil and gentle. Beautifully preserved white-washed cottages nestle in half wild gardens, water trickles and burbles down old stone irrigation channels and one almost expects to see the shadowy figure of a woman in the garb of yesteryear, with a basket of roses over her arm, disappearing around the next corner... Here the rush and bustle of the city seems far, far away. Wander along some of the beautiful trails in our nature reserves, watch the birds at play from the hide, have a delicious meal and a chat at one of our coffee shops or restaurant, or relax with an aromatherapy massage.

McGregor, a village lost in time, a place for reflection. You may never want to leave.
